وقف قايين طويلًا بجوار العتليت، يُحدّق في وجهه القوي الجميل الذي رققه النوم، كان صدره القوي يرتفع وينخفض مع تنفسه المنتظم الذي أراح الشارب الأسود، فكشف عن أسنان الرجل القوية اللامعة، فبدا كأنه يبتسم. وبتنهيدة عميقة ورأس مطأطأة ذلًا وانكسارًا تحول اليهودي عنه، وسار بحذاء النهر خائفًا حذرًا، فالحياة في عينيه الآن مليئة بالرعب والمخاوف، مخففًا من سرعته حيث الطريق مضاء بنور القمر، ويعدو مسرعًا في الأماكن المظلمة، أشبه بفأر، بحيوان صغير جبان، ويعود إلى جحره والأخطار تتهدده من كل جانب. وأرخى الليل سدوله، ورقد الشاطئ مهجورًا
