مكسيم جوركي كاتب روسي سوفييتي كبير رشح لنوبل للأدب خمس مرات عن أعماله الأدبية العظيمة التي تمثل هذه الرواية "أين الله: اعترافات ابن الشعب" واحدة منها. ولد جوركي عام 1869 وتوفي عام 1936 وبين العامين رحلة ثرية مع الأدب والكفاح السياسي، أسس جوركي خلالها منهج الواقعية الاشتراكية الأدبي. أصبح يتيم الأب والأم في التاسعة من عمره فربته جدته على الحكايات والقصص بأسلوب شيق أثمر نواة الأدب في داخله منذ الصغر. تأخذنا الرواية في رحلة شيقة جدًّا مع بطلها، حول الهدف من الحياة، واستسلامنا لأفكارنا الأولى التي تعطينا الأمان الذي قد يكون زائفًا أحيانًا. رواية تطرح علينا أسئلة لا تتوقف: ما هو الإيمان؟ ما هي المبادئ؟ هل يمكن للإنسان الشك؟ ما فضيلة البحث عن الحقيقة؟ نرحل مع البطل الذي بدأ رحلته المجنونة في البحث عن الله ليتخلص من عذاباته الداخلية، وانتقل من دير لآخر، ومرّت به الكثير من المواقف والمصادفات التي لم تزد نهاراته إلا ظلامًا دامسًا، وعلى الرغم من أنه كان يعيش محطًا بالرهبان، إلا أنه عاش وحيدًا في الأرض، مغتربًا عن نفسه وعن العالم! لم يعرف الحقيقة التي آمن بها إلا بعد حين. لتنتهي قصة البحث بعد أن وصل إلى الحقيقة التي كان يبحث عنها والتي تعزز إيمانه، حيث يعطينا الكاتب في النهاية إجابته السخية.
