القصص السبعة التي يضمها هذا الكتاب مختارة من ثنايا تلك مجموعات قصصية أصدرها مكسيم جوركي ، وقام المترجم بنقلها عن ترجمة غاية في الدقة إلى الفرنسية، وهي اللغة التي عرفنا من خلالها كقراء عرب أغلب النماذج الشهيرة للأدب الروسي، قبل أن يتاح لنا ترجمات عن الأصل الروسي مباشرة دون المرور على لغة وسيطة. وكان جوركى المشهور بأعماله الروائية الخالدة ومن أشهرها "الأم" قد أصدر عدة مجلدات تضمنت قصصه القصيرة، منها مجموعته "قصص عن الأبطال"، ثم «أقاصيص» والتي تضم اثنا عشر قصة هي: ماكار تشودرا – رفيقي في الطريق – الجد ارخيب وليونكا – العجوز ايزرجيل – تشيلكاش – ذات مرة في الخريف – أنشودة العقاب – كونفالوف – مالفا – ستة وعشرون رجلاً وفتاة واحدة – في أمريكا مدينة الشيطان الأصفر – أنشودة نذير العاصفة، وبعدها "أقاصيص من أنحاء روسيا" وتشمل: مولد إنسان – انزلاق الجليد – الأحزان الغليظة – الحب الأول، ومنها أيضا مجموعته «حكايات عن إيطاليا» وتضم خمس قصص هي: "الإضراب – أطفال بارما – النفق – الأم – نونشيا – بيب".
