على الرغم من إهتمام الدارسين بشعراء الجاهلية والإسلام، ومتابعة أخبارهم، وجمع أشعارهم، فإنّ كثيراً من أولئك الشعراء لم يتهيّأ لهم من الإهتمام ما ينصفهم، بغض النظر عن أسباب ذلك.
ومن هؤلاء الشعراء (نهشل بن حري) الذي قلّ المجموع من شعره، ولم يفصّل الدارسون القول في حياته وشعره، وليس له من التعريف غير ما ذكره ابن سلاّم (231هـ) في طبقات فحول الشعراء ببضعة أسطر، ونقل عنه الدارسون ذلك، لم يضيفوا شيئاً ذا بال، وتابعهم الدكتور حاتم صالح الضامن إلي كتب عن الشاعر ضمن كتابه الموسوم بــ (عشرة شعراء مقلّون).
ولقد قادني ما لحق بالشاعر نهشل بن حري من إهمال إلى إستقصاء اخباره، وملاحقة شعره في كتب التاريخ والأدب القديمة، فكان هذا البحث الذي وسمته بـ (نهشل بن حرّي: حياته وشعره) متوخّياً: 1-حفظ شعر نهشل بن حرّي الدارمي بين دفتي كتاب، بعد أن حقق (أ. د. حاتم صالح الضامن) أغلب شعره، 2-محاولة التحقق من الشعر المنسوب إليه، 3-محاولة التحقق من شعر غيره المنسوب إليه، بعد أن فات ذلك المحققين، 4-تقصّي أخباره الأسرية والقبلية التي كان لها أثراً مهماً في صقل موهبته الشعرية.
وقد اقتضت طبيعة البحث أن أعقده على ستة فصول.
