يُعد الشعر الجاهلي ميداناً فسيحاً ومنهلاً ثراً ورده الأوائل واللاحقون فهو واحد من المصادر المهمة لتاريخ العرب وحضارتهم في ذلك العصر فيه حفظت الأنساب والوقائع والأيام منه استقيت فصاحة اللغة وعليه عُرضت لغة كتاب الله الكريم.
من هذا المفهوم انطلق المؤلف برغبة قوية وحب شديد للإستمرار في خوض غمار البحث في هذا الميدان متوخياً الدراسة والإستقصاء عن ظواهر جديدة لم تنلها عناية الباحثين المرجوة والإبتعاد عما يكتنف الدراسة من مخاطر التكرار وإذا كان الحيوان ولا سيما (الإبل والخيل) قد حظي بإهتمام الباحثين القدامى والمحدثين، فإن الطير وهو جزءٌ من عالم الحيوان لم يحظَ بتلك العناية على الرغم من كثرة وروده في الشعر العربي القديم .
واقتصرت نظرة القدماء إلى هذا الكائن من زاوية واحدة تمثلت في علاقته بمعتقدات العرب الفكرية وأساطيرهم القديمة وإغفالهم لجوانب كثيرة منها تجاوزهم النصوص الشعرية وما تشتمل عليه من دلالات ومضامين فنية رائعة وإكتفاؤهم ببعض الأبيات في مجال الإستشهاد وهذا ما تركنا للبحث مهمة الكشف عنه في هذا الكتاب.
