ويدرس هذا الكتاب الشعر الجاهلي دراسة فنية وموضوعية، فيعرض لثقافة الجاهليين ودياناتهم، كما يعالج رؤية الشعر الجاهلي عند القدماء ويبين مراحلها المختلفة، ثم يتناول القضية نفسها عند المحدثين من أمثال مرجوليوث وطه حسين، وهي القضية التي أثارت جدلاً واسعاً، حسمته هذه الدراسة بموضوعية وبشهادات موثقة.
والكتاب يدرس-كذلك-قضايا نقد الشعر الجاهلي بين القدامى والمحدثين، فيتناول آراء النقاد القدامى ويضعها في إطارها الصحيح، ثم يعرض للمناهج النقدية الحديثة بالنقد والتحليل، ولا يفوته أن يقف وقفه مطولة عند البناء الفني للشعر الجاهلي، فيدرس الصورة الشعرية بين الفن والدين، كما يدرس موسيقى الشعر الجاهلي، كل ذلك في لغة نقدية هادئة وواضحة، لا يعنيها إلا وضع الحق في موضعه.
