الجهاد واجب في الشريعة الإسلامية للدفاع عن الإسلام والمسلمين، ويدل على وجوبه العقل والنقل كتاباً وسنّة؛ والجهاد واجب كفائي إذا قام به البعض سقط عن الجميع إذا تحققت بهم الكفاية، وإلا فيجب على غيرهم أيضاً في هذه الحالة.
في هذا الكتاب يقدم الشيخ حسن محمد فياض حسين العاملي (أحكام الدفاع والجهاد): المطابق لفتاوى الإمام السيد علي الحسيني الخامنئي، وطبقاً لفتاوى الإمام الخميني وعلى هذا الأساس تم للمؤلف تنظيم مسائل الجهاد والدفاع ضمن الأبواب والعناوين التي يكثر الإبتلاء بها، وخصوصاً "التكاليف التي تطرأ على المكلّف أثناء الحرب والمعركة سواء ما يرتبط بالآخرين أم ما يرتبط بنفسه وفعله". أما عن مادة هذا الكتاب فاستندت إلى "الأسئلة والأجوبة الواردة إلى مكتب الإمام الخامنئي والموجودة في الأرشيف" مع الإشارة إلى مصدر كل مسألة في حاشية الكتاب.
يحتوي الكتاب على فصلين، جاء الفصل الأول في فضل الجهاد والدفاع وشروطه وكيفيته وأحكامه "أحكام الشهيد – أحكام الأسير – أحكام الجرحى – وأحكام الغنائم"، أما الفصل الثاني فجاء في الطاعة والعبادة أثناء الجهاد "الوضوء – الضلاة – الصوم" وأخيراً الإخلاص لله تعالى وذكره سبحانه.
