لا تزال العلاقة بين اللغة والفكر تشغل بال العلماء في المدارس اللغوية والفلسفية والنفسية والإجتماعية على مر العصور. لقد مكنت اللغة الإنسان من تكوين أسر وكيانات بشرية ومجتمعات إنسانية، فإذا نظرنا في أي جانب من جوانب الإجتماع في حياة الإنسان سنجد أثر اللغة أوضح ما يكون، سواء كانت تلك الجوانب متصلة بالثقافة، أو بالدين، أو بالسياسة والقوميات، أو المعاملات التجارية والإقتصادية وغيرها.
يسلط هذا الكتاب الضوء على "علم اللغة العام" لإطلاع القارىء على مبادئه ونظرياته التي جاد بها، وتقريبها من تفكيره، وربطها بالآثار العلمية والدينية للفرد المسلم. كل ذلك يأتي من خلال معرفتنا بما كتبه العلماء العرب، القدماء والمحدثون، وما نقل وترجم عن الغربيين. وهو ما يشكل مادة الكتاب التي توزعت على ثلاثة أبواب هي:
الباب الأول: عنوانه" مدخل إلى علم اللغة" ويتكوّن من فصلين: الأول: يتحدث عن الإتصال، ومفهومه، وأنواعه، ومظاهره التي تشمل الإشارة، والعلامات، والصفير، والهمس، والسلوك، والتعبير الفني. وأما الفصل الثاني فيتحدث عن لغة الكلام، وأهميتها الفكر وجوانب الإجتماع الإنساني الثقافية.
وأما الباب الثاني: فعنوانه "علم اللغة" ويتكون من فصلين ايضاً. الأول: يتحدث عن معنى اللغة وهدفه، وعلاقته بغيره من العلوم، وأما الثاني: فيتحدث عن نشأة علم اللغة وأطواره عند الأمم.
وأما الباب الثالث والأخير فعنوانه "مستويات التحليل اللغوي" ويشتمل على اربعة فصول: الأول: مستوى التحليل الصوتي، الثاني مستوى التحليل الصرفي، الثالث: مستوى التحليل النحوي، الرابع: مستوى التحليل الدلالي.
