إن الدراسة اللغوية صاحبةُ تراث لغوي تليد، كونته عبر الحضارات الإنسانية المتلاحقة، والمتواكبة، مُنذ بدأ التفكير اللغوي في صورة وعي لغوي، حتى غدا فكراً منظماً على يد الأمم السابقة.
وقد طورت الدراساتُ اللغويةُ نفسَها بتأثير المناهج الحديثة، وعندما دخل هذا العلم بيئاتنا العربية، كثرت تسمياته، ما بين: "علم اللغة"، و"اللسانيات" و"الألسنية" و"فقه اللغة"... إلخ. ولكن أشهرها هو: "علم اللغة".
وعلى الرغم من حداثةِ "علم اللغة" فقد قطع شوطاً بعيداً في مجال العلم والمعرفة، والبحث والدراسة، وحقق إنجازات علميةً رائدة، سواء أكان ذلك في المناهج، أم في الآراء والنظريات، أم في الوسائل العلمية والأجهزة التحليلية، أم في طرق الدراسة ونظمها، أم في القوانين اللغوية، أم في النتائج والأحكام.
وعلى ذلك: فستكون هذه الدراسة اللغوية لعلم اللغة العام في قسمين: القسم الأول: عن "علم اللغة العام" من حيث الأسس، والقواعد، والطرق، والوسائل، والمناهج، والإتجاهات، والمدارس، مما يمثله الشق الأول؛ أما القسم الثاني: عن "علم اللغة العربي" الذي يتوفر على دراسة اللغة العربية بمستوياتها اللغوية المتعددة، في ضوء معطيات علم اللغة العام، مما يمثله الشق الثاني.
