يرتكز هذا الكتاب على قوله تعالى: ﴿ إِنَّمَا وَلِيُّكُمْ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا الَّذِينَ يُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ الزَّكَاةَ وَهُمْ رَاكِعُونَ﴾...
وكما يورد مؤلف كتاب (الولاية) السيد عبد الحسين دستغيب؛ هناك روايات كثيرة جاءت عن الفريقين بشأن تفسير هذه الآية الكريمة، وخلاصة هذه التفاسير: أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان في البيت، وكان في المجلس عبد الله بن سلام وعدد آخر من الصحابة عليهم السلام، إذ نزلت هذه الآية على النبي الأكرم صلى الله عليه وسلم ومعناها: إن القيّم والحاكم عليكم هو الله تعالى، وهذه القيمومة لرسوله أيضاً، وبعدهما هي للذين آمنوا وأقاموا الصلاة وآتوا الزكاة"...
بناء عليه، لا يقتصر كتاب (الولاية) حول مفهوم الولاية ومن المراد بها، بل يتجاوز ذلك إلى فوائد وإشارات ووصايا تتصل بها يتقرب من خلالها المؤمنون إلى الله تعالى، ويسيرون على هدي نبيهم وآله بيته، ويفعل ذلك المؤلف عبر تقديمه الكثير من المشاهد الحيّة عن حياة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وآل بيته، وسلوكاتهم وأحاديثهم ورواياتهم الشريفة.
ووفقاً للمؤلف: الولاية من أصول الدين، والولاية بمعنى الطاعة، وبعبارة أخرى: إن الولاية تعني الحكومة الإلهية، وأن يرى الإنسان العبودية في نفسه، ولا يرى لنفسه الإستقلالية، بل يرى نفسه عبداً لله ويرى جميع هذه اللذات نعماً من الله تعالى... والنعمة تعني الولاية، تعني الطاعة والإنقياد والتسليم للحق...
