يقول محمد علي مقلد في مقدمة هذا الكتاب "اغتيال الدولة" بأن خمسة عشر عاماً من الكتابة حول قضية إعادة بناء الوطن والدولة، وإعادة بناء اليسار والحزب الشيوعي اللبناني، لم تذهب هباء، وذلك رغم كل مشاعر اليأس والإحباط والمرارة التي أصابت المئات من الكادرات والآلاف من المناضلين، ورغم موجات العزوف من الانخراط في الشأن العام. مضيفاً بأن استشهاد الحريري أخرج الشعب اللبناني من قمقمه، وأثبت أن الأجيال الجديدة لم تنكفئ، بل هي ملأت ساحتي الشهداء ورياض الصلح، أملاً بلبنان جديد، كما أثبت استشهاد جورج حاوي أن شعب اليسار لم يعتزل، وأن غيابه هو مجرد احتجاج صامت على الموت البطيء الذي يتمناه له أعداؤه ويعجل به ارتباك قيادة الحزب الشيوعي اللبناني.
وأما عن نص هذا الكتاب فهو في ظاهره عبارة عن مقالات متفرقة، لكنه في حقيقة نص واحد، بدأ باقتراح تقدم به محمد علي المقلد أمام الاجتماعات التمهيدية للمؤتمر السابع للحزب الشيوعي اللبناني، ليشكل؛ في حال إقراره، خطة للحزب من أجل إنقاذ الوطن، غير أن القيادة، كما يذكر، لم تتبن الاقتراح الذي استبعدته عن مشروع الوثيقة الرسمية، بل اعتبره المتشردون في حينه محاولة، حثيثة، أو ذكية نحو انحراف "يميني" من شأنه، إذا ما أقره المؤتمر أن يحوّل الخراب إلى حزب ليبرالي غريب عن الماركسية اللينينية وتقاليدها ونظريتها الثورية، مؤكداً بأنه وبسبب ذلك لم يحالفه الحظ في بلوغ المؤتمر.
