في جديده (الشيعية السياسية: بحث في معوقات بناء الدولة) يستخدم الدكتور "محمد علي مقلد" مقاربة (سوسيو/نقدية) يسلط من خلالها الأضواء على تجارب المارونية السياسية والسنية السياسية على وجه العموم، والشيعية السياسية على وجه الخصوص. الفرضية التي يدور حولها الكتاب بسيطة - يقول المؤلف – الشيعية السياسية، كمثيلتها المارونية والسنية، تستند إلى قوة ذات تركيبة طائفية بل مذهبية، لكنها ليست مشروعاً طائفياً، بل مشروع سياسي حزبي وفئوي يقوم على المحاصصة، ولا يستطيع، شأنه في ذلك شأن سواه، أن يرجح حصته في السلطة والثروة الوطنية إلا إذا استقوى بقوة خارجية. هذا ما جعل تاريخ لبنان الحديث سلسلة من التوترات والحروب الأهلية التي يفجرها تنافس مقيت على تقاسم النفوذ بين القوى المحلية، وتغذيها مصالح القوى الإقليمية والدولية، ما جعل التاريخ نفسه موضع نزاع ومستقبل الوطن رهناً بتوازنات خارجية بالدرجة الأولى. وفي هذا الكتاب سعى المؤلف إلى تشريح مقولات متداولة في الفكر السياسي وفي الصراع على السلطة، مثل الطائفية والطائفية السياسية والدولة الطائفية والعلمنة، تشريح يفضي إلى تبيان عقمها المعرفي والعلمي، ولا سيما بعدما أثبتت تجربة قرن من الزمن فشلها الذريع – برأي المؤلف – كأدوات تحليل أو كشعارات نضالية تطمح إلى التغيير. وفي بحثه عن معوقات بناء الدولة في لبنان يفكك المؤلف أدوات التحليل السياسي التقليدية، ويثبت عدم جدواها، ويستبدلها بمفاهيم ومصطلحات جديدة، ويقترح على ضوئها تشخيصاً لماهية الصراع حول مفهوم الدولة، ثم لماهية الصراع حول آليات بنائها، وأقام حواراً مع شعارات التغيير اليسارية والليبرالية والقومية التي يرى "أنها بلغت حدودها التاريخية، وآن أوان استبدالها" وأخيراً يطرح تساؤله: عما إذا كان ممكناً بناء دولة مدنية بعيداً عن استخدام مصطلح العلمانية "الاستفزازي".
