اتفق النقاد العرب على أن أشعر أهل الإسلام ثلاثة: جرير والفرزدق والأخطل. واختلفوا في تقديم بعضهم على بعض، لكن معظمهم قدم جريراً، لأنه "كان أكثرهم فنون شعر، وأسهلهم ألفاظاً، وأقلهم تكلفاً، وأرقهم نسيباً".
ولئن اختلف النقاد في هذا التقديم في جملة أشعار هؤلاء الشعراء الثلاثة، فإنهم يتفقون على أن جريراً كان أفضل من زميليه (الأخطل والفرزدق) في الهجاء والنسيب.
ومهما يكن من أمر، فلجرير قصائد رائعة في الهجاء، والمدح، والرثاء، والغزل، وبعض الأغراض الأدبية الأخرى، إلى جملة نوادر تدل على ظرفه وكياسته وفحولته الشعرية. فقد جاء هذا الكتاب في سبعة أبواب على النحو التالي: الباب الأول: ترجمته، الباب الثاني: من أروع ما قال في الهجاء، الباب الثالث: من أروع ما قال في المدح، الباب الرابع: من أروع ما قال في الرثاء، الباب الخامس: من أروع ما قال في الغزل، الباب السادس: من أروع ما قال في موضوعات مختلفة، الباب السابع: من نوادره.
