الشعر هو الفن القولى الذى يعبر بالكلمة عن مكنون النفس وخفاياها، ولعله أقدر الفنون على التعبير، وأكثرها انتشاراً وأسهلها أداة، ولايمكن أن ينهض الشعر الحديث إلا إذا اتخذ من الشعر القديم دعامة له قوية يقوم عليها ويستوحيه التعبير الصادق، البعدي عن الزيف الفنى.
لذلك كان لزاماً علينا بل واجباً مقدساً إحياء التراث القديم من الأدب العربي وإبرازاه فى صورة تساير نهصتنا العظيمة، وتتناسب مع جلال هذا التراث وما أداه لأصحابه من خدمة فنية صادقة.
وكان هذا المعنى يلازم طوال دراستى للأدب العربي اطلاعى على روائعى التى اهتم بدساتها وتحقيق بعض نصوصها لفيف من علمائنا، ووجدت أن المكتبة العربية ما زالت خالية من النصوص المحققة لبعض أعلام شعرائنا الكبار، وفى مقدمتهم الحطيئة الذى قمت بتحقيق ديوانه منذ بضع سنوات، وجرير الذى احتل مكان مرموقة فى سماء الشعر القديم.
كان إعجابى بهذا الشاعر هو الذى حفزنى إلى المشاركة فى ميدان تحقيق النصوص الأدبية باختيار ديوانه لتحقيقه تحقيقاً علمياً. على الرغم من علمة بصعوبة السير فى هذا الميدان لوعورة الطريق وكثرة ما فيه من صعوبات شعرت بها فى أثناء تحقيق ديوان الحطيئة من قبل.
ثم أخذت بعد ذلك فى دراسة شعر جرير منذ سنوات، وخرجت من دراستى له بوجوب تحقيق ديوانه تحقيقاً علمياً ليتسى لدراسه أن يحكم على شعره حكما نقدياً صحيحاً وليستطيع من يدرس شعر غيره من الشعراء كالفرزدق والأخطل وكثير وغيرهم أن يصحح أخطاء وقعت فى نسبة بعض أشعار لغيرهم نسبت إليهم أو أشعار لهم نسبت إلى غيرهم.
