للدعاء في اللغة معانٍ عدة منها: العبادة والاستعانة والسؤال والطلب والنداء والقول. أما في الاصطلاح فقد عزّف بأنه "الابتهال إلى الله تعالى بالسؤال والرغبة فيما عنده من الخير، والتضرع إليه في تحقيق المطلوب وإدراك المأمول، أو هو استدعاء العبد ربه العناية، واستمراره إياه المعونة. وفي هذا الكتاب طائغة من الأدعية وهي أروع ما قيل منها. واستهل المؤلف كتابه بأدعية الرسول (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، وهي أفضل الأدعية على الإطلاق، مثبتاً من ثم بعض أدعية السلف الصالح في فصول رتبها بحسب وفاة أصحابها، ومنهياً ذلك كله بثلاثة ملاحق، جاعلاً في الأول منها بعض أدعية النبي داوود، وفي الثاني "دعوات الأيام السبعة ولياليها للبوني. أما الثالث فقد ضمنه بعض أدعية الآداب، وهذه لم تخل من فائدة ومتعة وندرة.
