في روايته هذه، بقايا نهار، يعود الروائي الدكتور سعد قاسم الأسدي الى الفترة الأثيرة لديه، الممتدة من منتصف سبعينيات القرن الماضي حتى ما بعد سقوط بغداد في قبضة الاحتلال الأمريكي وشيوع ظاهرة الإرهاب، ليقدم لنا وثيقة صادقة عن هذه الفترة المضطربة التي ساد في أولها القمع والاضطهاد ثم كثرت فيها الحروب والانكسارات فانتهى الأمر الى أن يغدو العراق مسلخا كبيرا يعمه القتل والتفجير ويسود فيه الإرهابيون ولصوص المال العام.
بقايا نهار رواية رائعة مشحونة بالعواطف، مليئة بالإثارة والترقب. بطلتها فتاة طيبة القلب قليلة الخبرة تحاول أن تجد طريقها في عالم تسوده الفوضى ويتحكم فيه اللصوص. تجد نفسها أمام خيار صعب تعتمد عليه حياتها المستقبلية. إنها رواية صراع الإنسان البسيط من أجل البقاء في زمن صعب، هيمنت فيه قوى الشر، تريد سلب كرامة الانسان وسرقة ثروات بلده.
وعلى الرغم من قوة الشر الذي يبسط ظلامه على البلد، الأمر الذي يزيد المشهد قتامة وعتمة، تكشف الرواية في فصولها الأخيرة أن الخير لا يموت مهما قويت شوكة أعدائه. يظل ينبض في قلوب بعض الأفراد ثم يفيض عطاءَ لتغسل مياهه أدران البشر ويبشر بمستقبل أكثر سعادة.
