يلعب معروف الكرخي دوراً هاماً في تاريخ التصوف والتشيع. فمن ناحية هو شيخ صوفي عارف تنتهي إليه أكثر سلاسل التصوف والعرفان، فهو أستاذ الجنيد البغدادي الذي قيل بشأنه: أول من تكلم في التصوف ببغداد، ويفتخر العلماء بانتمائهم إليه وكلماته تعتبر من المصادر الأولية في التصوف. ومن ناحية أخرى اشتهر انه أخذ التصوف والعرفان عن ثامن الأئمة الأثني عشر الإمام علي بن موسى الرضا عليهما السلام وهو عن أبيه عن أجداده عليهم أفضل الصلاة والسلام.
فمع ثبوت تشيع معروف الكرخي وصلته بالإمام الرضا عليه السلام يثبت بسهولة أن التشيع من الناحية التأريخية هو مصدر التصوف والعرفان. وأول من أنكر ذلك وبالتالي تشيعه هو ابن الجوزي الحنبلي المتوفي 598هـ والسبب في إنكاره هو أستاذه ابن ناصر الحنبلي المتعصب. ثم تابعه على ذلك الذهبي وابن تيمية في القرن الثامن فقط. ثم الوهابية في العصر الأخير وقطاع من مدرسة الشيخية في إيران.
وكل أصحاب التراجم شيعة وسنة عدا هؤلاء يعتقدون باتصال معروف الكرخي بالإمام الرضا عليه السلام وأخذ خرقه التصوف منه. ولخطورة هذه المسألة وتوجه الاعتراضات أخيراً من قبل مدرسة الشيخية والوهابية، كتب "قاسم الطهراني" رسالة هذه التي بين أيدينا والتي تحتوي على دراسة تاريخية مستوعبة لحيوة معروف الكرخي وإثبات تشيعه وصلته بالإمام الرضا عليه السلام بوصفه همزة الوصل من الناحية التاريخية بين التشيع والتصوف.
