الشعر العامي أو الزجل مرآة تعكس صورة المجتمع ويكاد لا يقل أهمية عن الشعر الفصيح، ورغم الاختلاف الواضح بين الشعر العامي والشعر الفصيح إلا أن الخلاف بينهما خلاف في اللفظ فقط، أما المعاني الشعرية فهي واحدة في اللغتين الفصحى والعامية. والشاعر الموهوب يستقي إلهامه وأحلامه من وسطه وشعبه فهو يحمل رسالة الشعور العام ويتعاطى التعبير عن العاطفة العامة. والشاعر ملا عبود الكرخي هو أحد الشعراء المعروف بوطنيته الصادقة وشجاعته الأدبية وله طريقة خاصة في شعره وأسلوب ممتاز في نظمه فهو يختار من لغة التفاهم ألفاظاً واضحة دالة على معان جليلة وينتقي من الكلمات ما يألفه الحضري والبدوي. كما امتاز شعره بحفظ لغة العراق الخاص به وبآدابه وأخلاقه وآرائه، وقد أحدثت قصائده ارتجاجاً في مجامع العامة وابتهاجاً في نفوس الخاص في أنحاء العراق آنذاك. إن عبود الكرخي شاعر عظيم يتغلغل شعره في طبقات الأمة كلها وهو يكنز في أشعاره ثروة طائلة من إحساس العامة وأفكارها، كما أنه يعبر عن طبقات الشعب ذات الصبغة المحلية البحتة بصدق.
