الكلمة عند البياتي تتوهج بلمعان خلاب، في قلب عالم الطبيعة الملون حيث الربيع والعصافير ونور الشمس مقابل الظلام والجدب والموت، إنه تعبير عن الأمل الإنساني في مواجهة الموت في الحياة بدأ عبد الوهاب البياتي شاعراً غنائياً ورومانسياً يمجد الحب وخاصة حب المرأة في ديوانه.
"ملائكة وشياطين" إلا أنه سرعان ما تحول إلى الواقعية الجديدة كتيار حداثي نظرت له المبادئ الماركسية، وانتشر سريعاً فكان له أتباع مريدون في أكثر أقطار العالم، والواقعية الجديدة تيار أدبي يسعى إلى كشف المعاني الاجتماعي والإيديولوجية، خلال العمل الأدبي، ويطلب من الأدب أن يصف الواقع وصفاً أميناً ويفهم بيئته، وأن يكون واقعياً اشتراكياً ينشد العدالة ويندد بالاستغلال وقد تبنى البياتي هذا الاتجاه فخسر وظيفته في بغداد. ونفي إلى خارج وطنه، غير أنه ظل أميناً لرسالة الشعر الاجتماعية في سنوات المنفى التي امتدت إلى خاتمة عمره، إذ انتقل الشاعر مقيماً في عدد من البلدان العربية وأوروبا الشرقية، حتى اتخذ من مدينة دمشق مقراً لإقامته منذ عام 1991م ولم يفتر عن التماس أشكال جديدة لتجربته الشعرية في منفاه، متابعاً حركة الشعر العالمي.
