يثبت جاسم الرصيف بكتابته لهذه الرواية بأنه روائي حقيقي، وأن فوزه بالجائزة الأولى، قبل سنتين (1983)، لم يكن مجرد صدفة. وقيمة الرواية-فضلاً عمّا فيها من شخصيات كثيرة بعضها غنيّ وبعضها طريف، وكلها جزء من مجتمع أخذت الحرب تغيّر أنماط الحياة فيه-قيمتها الإضافية هي في أن المؤلف استعرض في صفحاتها أكثر من أربع سنوات من القتال على نحو وثائقي دون أن يفقد الصلة ولو مرة واحدة بتنامي أحداث الرواية كرواية، كعمل فنيّ يتنتهي بها إلى نصر الجزيرة.
وقد اختار أن يكون واقعيّاً، واقعياً حدّ الألم والكآبة وقبض النفس. وبقدر ما صوّر صمود المدينة (البصرة) وتحمّل أهلها لمآسي الحرب المتلاحقة يفرضها عليهم عدوّ جاهل، فإنه يصور أهوال الحرب ودمارها ورفض الإنسان لها، وكان شاعريته بادية في الكثير من صفحات عمله.
