إن العلاقة بين العرب والأتراك تضرب بجذورها عميقاُ في الزمن، وتكتسب أهميتها من العوامل المشتركة بين الأمتين، ولا تقتصر هذه العوامل على أواصر الدين والثقافة والتاريخ بل تشمل أيضاً الموقع الجغرافي والصلات الإنسانية بين الناس من الطرفين.
وقد شاب هذه العلاقات ضرب من القطيعة أولاً إبان الحرب العالمية الأولى، ثم تحولت القطيعة بمرور الأيام إلى فتور وغموض وتشوش أدت أحياناً إلى الإهمال.
وجاء عصرنا الحاضر بتحدياته التي تفرض نفسها على منطقتنا فجعلت من الضروري إعادة النظر في ما خلفه التاريخ على أطراف الجوار من ترسبات في العلاقات العربية-التركية.
من هنا تأتي أهمية الندوة التي عقدها مركز دراسات الوحدة العربية عن "العلاقات العربية-التركية: حوار مستقبلي"، وقد انعقدت الندوة في بيروت ودامت أربعة أيام من الخامس عشر حتى الثامن عشر من تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 1993، وحضرها وشارك فيها عدد من ذوي الاختصاص والمفكرين والمثقفين.
يضم هذا الكتاب النصوص الكاملة للبحوث التي قدمت إلى الندوة ووقائع التعقيبات والمناقشات التي دارت فيها, وقد تناولت البحوث مسائل شتى مثل "الموروث التاريخي العثماني وتأثيره على العلاقات العربية-التركية" و"الثوابت والمتغيرات حركية الوعي الجماعي القومي العربي والتركي" و"الخيارات الفكرية والسياسية لدى العرب والأتراك" و"العلاقات الاقتصادية العربية-التركية الراهنة" و"إشكالية المياه" و"أوضاع المرأة العربية والتركية" و"الأسس الواقعية لمستقبل العلاقات العربية-التركية" و"وآفاق التعاون في المجالات الاقتصادية" وغيرها.
وقد تميز الحوار الجاري في الندوة، والمناقشات التي أعقبت تقديم البحوث بالصراحة والتدقيق والتصويب، وأفضى ذلك إلى الاتفاق حيناً وإلى الاختلاف حيناً آخر مما أغنى الندوة بالحيوية.
