نشأ الأديب جعفر محسن الأمين في بيئة دينية وعلمية بدا أثرها واضحاً عليه وعلى كتاباته الشعرية والنثرية. وقد نظم الشعر في صباه، ولم ير ديوانه النور إلا بعد إحدى وعشرين سنة على وفاته (2002). أما شعره فقد نهج فيه نهجاً تقليدياً من حيث الشكل والمضمون. في سيرته الذاتية التي خطّها بيده، يلمس القارئ صراحة وجرأة قلّ نظيريهما، حيث يوجه النقد اللاذع لما يسمى بالتابوات الشخصية أو العائلية أو الاجتماعية، أو الأخلاقية التي عانى منها الكثير وكانت سبباً في حرمانه السعادة.
ويشتمل هذا الكتاب على سائر الكتابات المخطوطة له وأبرزها سيرته الذاتية، كما أضيف لهذا الكتاب ما قيل من شعر ونثر في المؤلف بعد وفاته وما كتب عن أدبه وفنه في بعض الصحف اللبنانية والعربية، كما ختم ببعض الوثائق والرسوم العائلية.
