في كفرصير وفي أواسط الثلاثينات نظم جعفر محسن الأمين بواكير قصائده ومنها نقل إلى النبطية ليلتحق بعدها بمدرسة الدوير الرسمية ومن ثم وبسبب نشاطه السياسي، وهو واحد من ثلاثة معلمين أسسوا الحزب الشيوعي في النبطية. وأما عن شعره. ففي شعره يلقي القارئ الحكمة والملامح الفلسفية وروح الدعابة والسخرية اللاذعة والنقد الاجتماعي التوجيهي، وشعره إلى ذلك حب طافح وإيمان بالمثل، ولعل حبه هو الذي جعله قادراً ومبدعاً وبعث فيه لذّة الجمال، فحوّله مثالياً عاجزاً عن تحمل الفوضى والبشاعة والانحطاط والتخلف غير متقبل أن تقتبل الحياة في أي كائن فيقول: وحصرت بالحيوان كل محبتي، فحكت بعيني الفذة الجرب الجرباء، ودجاجة معطاء أسقط ريشها، من ضعفها، وبسينة برشاء، والذ نطق صار عندي حينما، تعوي بقربي الكلبة الجرباء.
واللغة في شعر جعفر بسيطة تقارب مفرداتها المفردات الشعبية التي يستسيغها السمع ويطرب لها، ينتقل بها من مستواها الشعبي إلى المستوى الأدبي، وهو إن لم يرق بأسلوبه وببيانه الشعري وبلاغة التعبير إلى مستوى الفحول من الشعراء العامليين فمما لا شك فيه هو أنه يحتل منزلة الكثيرين منهم من حيث توقد الذهن ورهافة الإحساس ونفاذ البصيرة والتوق الدائم إلى إصلاح ما فسد ورفع مستوى القارئ إلى المستوى النموذجي الأمثل.
لقد كان الحاضر الدائم الذي لم تغب عن شعره صورة الواقع الاجتماعي والمرحلة التاريخية التي عاشها فلا تجد في شعره إلا الشدائد والمخاوف والضرورات والأحلام وانكسار الذات وخيبات النفس الموجعة وأشواقها وصبواتها كما أنه لم ينقطع عن حركة المجتمع وقضاياه فكانت مفهوماته عن الحياة والإنسان شمولية في معظم ما تناوله من أغراض شعرية متداخلة في قصائد قد شكلت لوحات فنية وسجلاً لمشاعره ومعاناته ومواقفه.
