إن محتوى الكتاب، من أفكارٍ وأسانيد وتطبيقات وأمثلة ومقارناتٍ، هو محاولةٌ لإظهار كيف يكون المترجم المعرِّب الكاتب فصيح الجملة سهل المأخذ بائن المقصد، لأن الترجمة إلى العربية تعريبٌ والتعريب تكييفٌ وإستيعابٌ والكتابة وسيلة وتجسيدٌ، ولن يكون هذا إلا بذلك.
ويناقش الكتاب الوضع الترجمي السائد المتشوّش، جاعلاً محوره التعريب كغاية، لا سيما في مضماري العلوم والأدبيّات، التي تتيح التلاقح بين الثقافات، علماً أن لكل حقلٍ من هذين الحقلين منافعه ومستلزماته.
ويتناول الكتاب التجربة العربية، إذ كانت الترجمة نافذة للعرب على ما أنتجته أمم أخرى، فبرز منهم علماء ومفكرون وفلاسفة مستندين على ترجمات من لغات أخرى وهذا كان حال الجاحظ والفارابي وابن رشد الذي كتب شروحه على ترجمات أرسطو واشتهر بها.
ولكي يتبلور مفهوم التعريب الترجمي، تُستقصى أنواع الترجمة وأطوارها وتجاربها وصولاً إلى عصر النهضة العربية التي انفتح بها العرب على حضاراتٍ وثقافات، فاصطدموا بالمصطلح المتخصص مثل القدماء واحتاروا في كيفية الإحاطة بالنص مبنىً ومعنىً، مع التوقّف عند الطرائق المتّبعة عند أولئك المترجمين الذين كانوا يعملون بالسليقة ولم يدرّبوا على الترجمة.
