عندما قيل مرة لأحد المتصوفة "من أي شيء هذه الآه؟" أجاب "من كل شيء!" وهو وصف يمكن تطبيقه على بقايا العراق ولسان حاله الواقعي. فقد أبقت التوتاليتارية والدكتاتورية عليه مراوحاً في مكانه وسرقت منه تاريخه الكلي من خلال سحقها لمعنى وقيمة التفاؤل بالمستقبل. إلا أن مفارقة العراق الحالية تجعل من الممكن، بل ومن الضروري أيضاً التفكير بإسدال الستار من أجل التخطيط لمشروع جديد. إذ لا شيء في العراق غير المستقبل! فكل ما جرى على حلبة تاريخه السياسي والاجتماعي في مجرى القرن العشرين يبدو عبثاً ومنافاة للعقل والحكمة. وها هو يقف وجهاً لوجه أمام ذاته الحقيقية، بعد انقطاع طويل من أجل البرهنة عل قدرته بأن يكون سيد نفسه. بمعنى قدرته على الانتقال من التوتاليتارية إلى الديمقراطية. وفي هذا الانتقال يمكن للروح العراقي التمتع الفعلي بنا يمكن دعوته بسيادة الأمل الدائم. وهي سيادة تفترض على الدوام مواجهة النفس، وتأمل التاريخ الذاتي، وتأسيس البدائل الواقعية للإشكاليات التي نواجهها. وفي هذا يكمن مضمون الرهان التاريخي للعراق ومعاصرة المستقبل فيه.
