كتبت هذه الرواية في الستينات. لقد آمن ايفان في النهاية رغماً عن المنطق, اما اليوشا فلقد بعث به الراهب الى العالم ليدخل في التجربة. لقد عذبني الله طوال حياتي هكذا يعلن دوستو يفسكي على لسان ايفان في الاخوة كرامازوف. الشمس وردة متألقة زينت ذروة الجبل، مرسلة أشعة عسجدية, شديدة الفتون. الهضاب البعيدة شعت في الشمس كمجامر من ذهب. غبار الحقول, بدا في ضياء الأصيل, ذروراً من تبر آخذاً بمجامع الأبصار. اشجار الحور باسقة في الأفق, رائعة كفرقة الحرس الملكي, ذات جلال. كان جالساً على كتف ساقية ذات خرير موسيقي, و قد نزع حذائيه و جوربيه و أدلى قدميه في الماء........ و انقبض قلبه لما فكر بأحلامه, و عبثاً راح يحاول حصر تلك الأحلام التي كانت أشبه برسوم ضبابية, غامضة المعالم, لايميز فيها شيئاً عن شيء. و طلعت في السماء نجمة أخرى صغيرة, بعيدة نائية, فتنهد. فلعله كان يريد الوصول إلى تلك النجمة أو الى قلامة الظفر الفضية . لعله كان يتوق الى بلوغ الافق الموشح بوشاح الغروب .. آه.. لقد كان من الصعب حصر الأماني التي يريدها و هذا ما كان متأكداً منه. و أرسل عينيه الى ذروى الجبال الغربية و غمغم: لا..حياتي ليست قصيرة بل و لا محدودة أيضاً. هذا الكون قديم و أزلي, و أنا كذلك قديم و أزلي . أنا لن أموت, لن أموت حتى و إن مات جسدي. و عب من هواء الحقول بشدة, و دار على عقبيه, و راح يمشي على طرف الساقية مردداً: أنا لن أموت.. أنا لن أموت و إن مات جسدي, و كان عائداً في الطريق الخالي.
