كان كنعان رسماً قديرا عالماً بأصول صنعة الفن، وقد اجتاز الطريق من البعدية، إلى المنظور، إلى التجسيم الوهمي، إلى النسب الفضائية، إلى النسيج المساحي لبنيات العناصر، مستخدماً كافة خامات التلوين حتى بلغ قدراً جاوز فيه الأكاديميين أنفسهم فى رحلته تلك التى نطلق عليها وصف "الواقعية الأكاديمية"
أنتج كنعان مئات اللوحات التى فجرت عجينته الأخاذة الغنية بالتنوع، والتضاد وبإعادة صياغة جماليات السطح، كانت تجربته الهامة تلك هى إجابة جديدة فى مواجهة التجريدية التعبيرية التى عشقها فى الأربعينيان.
إن الحسى عند كنعان هو حالة متصوفة، مليئة بكل سماوات اللحظة، وهى هكذا سرعان ما تلقى بغيتها حين تنتج فى ثناياها متعة العقل، واثر المعرفة. إن فضل كنعنا الأول يعود إلى عناده الذى لم يتوقف فى تحرير الفن من حالة الماضى، وفى بث الجسارة والإطاحة والطموح، وكسر والدوائر المغلقة، ونبذ الخوف. وبذلك فتح الباب على مصراعيه لتلك المواهب المؤلهة لدورها فى حركة الفن المصري، حتى تأخذ أهبتها، وتبدأ مشفة الصراع بحثاً عن المستقبل.
