إن موضوع السلطة والشرعية في نظام الحكم في صدر الإسلام يبدو مهمشاً، هذا التهميش يعود الى عدة أسباب: أولها، صعوبة الموضوع الذي يتصل بقضايا ثقافية وفكرية، وبالخطاب السياسي والديني، وبالوعي الجماعي، وما يمكن أن يختزنه من تصورات عن السلطة وشرعية السلطة وتداولها ليبرز على السطح كلما تعرضت السلطة لشرخ ينتج عن انعدام التوازن بين الممارسة والسياسية لهذه السلطة والمتغيرات التي تحدث على ارض الواقع.
أما السبب الثاني، فهو يتعلق بغياب النظريات السياسية الإسلامية حول السلطة بسبب انغماس الفكر السياسي في الديني المقدس مما حوّله إلى نوع من "الوصايا الدينية أو الأحكام السلطانية".
أما السبب الثالث، فهو ابتعاد الباحثين من بين المسلمين عن الخوض في هذه المسألة بحكم ارتباطها بالديني والمقدس، وما يمكن أن ينجرّ عن ذلك من الحساسيات الدينية والسياسية التي قد تؤدي إلى الكثير من الإتهامات.
إن الفترة التي اخترناها للبحث هي القرنين الأولين للهجرة، وذلك لأن هذه الفترة مثّلت ذكرى حيّة طبعت وجدان المسلمين عن تداول السلطة بين الخلفاء، وشحنت مخيالهم الجماعي بصور وتمثّلات انعكست في صراعاتهم دفاعاً عن هذا الخليفة أو ذاك، وقد تباينت المواقف وتناقضت حول الشخصية نفسها.
وما زالت فترة الخلافة الراشدة، هي النموذج الذي يُطرح في كل مرة تُطرح فيها قضية شرعية السلطة في الإسلام.
