يمثل أدب السيرة ميداناً هاماً من ميادين الأدب العربي الثلاثة (الحديث والسيرة والتفسير) وهو إلى جانب ذلك يمثل أحد المصادر الأساسية التي نشأ على أساسها علم التاريخ عند العرب.
في هذا الكتاب تضع الدكتورة "حياة عمامو" قراءتها النقدية لمصادر السيرة النبوية فبدأت بعرض هادئ ورصين ومحايد للمناهج الغربية أو الإستشراقية، في البحث في مصادر السيرة النبوية. وقد ميزت بين مقاربات ثلاث: وصفية ونقدية وتسكيكية مع لحظ اهتمامها الشديد بما كتبه هشام جعيط في قولها أم جعيط: "تفوق على المستشرقين في اعتماد المقاربة النقدية في التعامل مع مصادر السيرة". بالإضافة إلى عرضها لنظرية باكلين شابي ومقاربتها للسيرة النبوية، ونظرية وانز بروغ والراحل ألفرد دوبريمار، وبهذا تكون المؤلفة قد عمدت إلى إنتقاء نصوص موجزة وعميقة الدلالة في آن من مختلف مصادر السيرة النبوية. فقدمت لنا في كتاب واحد كل ما وقع بين يديها من كتب مؤلفين أجانب وعرب تمت بصلة إلى سيرة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم فأمعنت فيها تحليلاً وبحثاً ومناقشة لإستخراج عناصر ومؤشرات ووقائع تاريخية مهمة بالإضافة إلى الجانب التطبيقي في دراسة السيرة، فكان شرح نص "مسير موسى ببني إسرائيل" وشرح "رسالة عروة بن الزبير إلى عبد الملك بن مروان، وشرح معركة بدر" من قسم المغازي في السيرة النبوية مع الإلتزام قدر الإمكان بما توصل إليه البحث العلمي والتاريخي في مجال السيرة النبوية.
