هذا كتاب يدون فيه مهدي عبد الحسين "سيرة الإمام موسى بن جعفر الكاظم عليه السلام من خلال قراءته لعصره المحتدم بكل ما أفرزته معطيات الحضارة في عصر ازدهارها، ذلك العصر الذي اشتبكت فيه الحضارات والعلوم ومواريث الأمم التي ضمتها الدولة الإسلامية المترامية الأطراف آنذاك، وتمازجت فيه الثقافات امتزاجاً غريباً تمخض عن اتجاه جديد في الموارد في مذاهب الحجاج والخلاف والتعامل مع معطيات العقل واستنباط الأحكام.
كما أراد المؤلف أن يكتب عن سيرته عليه السلام من آراء في السياسة والإمامة، وما اضطربت فيه منازع الناس في الحكم والإدارة، تلك المنازع التي اصطبغت بصبغة دينية واستندت على قواعد شرعية استمدتها من موروثها الديني واستنبطتها مما أفرزه امتزاج الثقافات والعلوم المختلفة، ثم محاولة استجلاء رأيه عليه السلام وموقفه فيما تمخضت عنه تلك المنازع والاتجاهات من نزاع في ميادين الكفاح المسلم أو في معاهد الدرس والجدل والحجاج.
ثم أراد أن يكتب عن سيرته الشخصية ومن خلال بيته العظيم ذي التاريخ الطويل بمثالية الخلق ومثالية العلم، والالتزام الغريب بجانب الحق المطلق، وبكل كريمة وكريم، وهي سيرة غريبة لم يألف التأريخ مثيلاً لها في مداه الطويل، وأغرب ما فيها أنها صورة تتكرر لا تملك نفسك حين تقف أمام أي جانب من جوانبها من الهتاف بأنها خليقة علوية لا شك فيها، ولا غبار عليها، إذا ما أراده المؤلف من هذا الكتاب ليس إلا كتابه سيرة هذا الإمام العظيم، منذ ولادته ونشأته في صميم البيت النبوي الكريم حيث تلقى العلم في مدرسة أبيه وجامعته الكبرى فاستلهم منها ما لم يستطع أن يستوعبه الشيوخ الكبار، واستوحى من بيته العظيم كرائم الأخلاق، فيتبدى فيض العلم وسمو الخلق في سيرته وهو لم يزل في أول عمره الشريف، لا يكاد يلتقيه أحد ممن مضى ردحاً في طلب العلم وتلقيه فيستفهمه مختبراً أو مستفهماً حتى تتجلى فيه صورة العالم الجليل والشيخ الوقور.
