شكل العلويون ظاهرة فريدة في التاريخ الإسلامي فمنذ نشأة الدولة المترفة في الإسلام، ارتبط تاريخهم بحركات دموية عنيفة وقاسية، وبالرغم من قسوة وفداحة الأحداث، فإنهم لم يرضخوا للخسف، ولم يستكينوا عن النضال، ولعل من الأسباب التي رسخت عندهم هذا الثبات العجيب لكل ما حدث هو نسبهم العلوي الذي يحمل دلالة تتجاوز الدلالة الاعتيادية للإنسان، لقد كان اسم العلويين يعني في بعض جوانبه النضال لاسترداد حق مضاع، دفع عنه أبوهم علي. وتجرد لإعادته ووضعه في نصابه، ورفض أن يداهن فيه، يدفعه لذلك خلق راسخ، يأبى إلا الإصرار والثبات، وورثوا منه ذلك الثبات على الكفاح، إضافة لخلائق شتى، مع عقيدة راسخ اعتقدوها واعتقدها معهم كثيرون، يدفعوهم لكفاح، ويعزوهم به، وتحمّل العسف والتنكيل، وكانت السلطات تعرف تلك الخليفة فيهم، كما يعرفها الناس، فكانوا لا يألون جهداً للتنكيل بهم إذ لا يرون العلوي إلا ثائراً أو متحفزاً للثورة وكذلك كانوا ينظرون إلى أتباعهم، لا ينظرون إليهم إلا خارجين، أو متحينين فرصة الوثوب.
وبالرغم من التقاء العلويين مع قوى أخرى تدعوا إلى القضاء على الملك الدنيوي الذي نشأ منذ مقتل الإمام علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام، والعودة إلى الإمامية الدينية، فقد كان هناك اختلاف في الدوافع وربما في الأهداف سيشير المؤلف إليها في هذا الكتاب، من قريب أو بعيد. ولئن صح ما يزعم المؤللف فيه أو لم يصح، فإنه يجب عدم إنكار ما لثورات العلويين من آثار مباشرة وعميقة
