بعد دراسة أجريت في بغداد (كليات التربية - أقسام اللغة العربية) لتعرّف الصعوبات التي تواجه تدريسيي مادة مناهج اللغة العربية وطرائق تدريسها، وطلبة المرحلة الثالثة في الكليات المذكورة، جاء هذا الكتاب الذي يرمي تحقيق عدد من الأهداف يمكن تحديدها بما يأتي:
1-تحديد القضايا المهمة في تطوير المنهج وما تتضمنه من تعميمات.
2-إبراز العلاقات التي توجد بين مكونات المنهج.
3-تأكيد التربية العقلية، لأنها الهدف الرئيس للمنهج، إذ لا بد من تعلم الحقائق وإكتساب المعرفة.
4-إكساب الطلبة الحقائق والمفهومات والقوانين خطوة بعد أخرى من طرق تعلم طرائق التدريس التقليدية والحديثة.
5-تعليم الجانب السيكولوجي والجانب الإجتماعي، كلا الجانبين على درجة واحدة من الأهمية.
6-رفد الطلبة بمعارف مهنية تساعدهم على فهم العملية التدريسية.
7-إعداد برنامج مبني على أسس سليمة ومتماشية مع الإتجاهات التربوية الحديثة التي تعمل على إكساب الدارسين المهارات والكفايات اللازمة.
8-إعداد مدرسين إعداداً يمكّنهم من تحمل المسؤولية الواقعة على عاتقهم، إذ يتوقف عليهم - إلى حد كبير - نجاح العملية التعليمية أو فشلها.
9-تطوير كفايات طلبة أقسام اللغة العربية في كليات التربية العلمية والعملية في ميدان التربية والتعليم سواء أكانت معرفية أم وجدانية أم نفسية حركية بعدّها نمطاً واضحاً ومهماً في إعداد المدرس لمهنته.
ويمكن الإفادة من محتوى هذا الكتاب في تدريس مادة مناهج اللغة العربية وطرائق تدريسها المقرر تدريسها لطلبة المرحلة الثالثة في كليات التربية، فضلاً عن إمكانية إفادة طلبة الدراسات العليا مما يحتويه من مفاهيم وطرائق تدريسية ووسائل تعليمية ونشاطات وغيرها.
