إن الدول النامية في محاولتها للتصدى لأنواع التحديات المختلفة التي تواجهها في مسيرتها نحو التقدم وتحقيق الآمال العريضة، ونحو تحقيق التنمية الإجتماعية والإقتصادية لمجتمعاتها إنما تتخذ من التعليم وسيلة أساسية لتحقيق هذه الأهداف، فهناك علاقة قوية بين التعليم والتنمية، فالمجتمعات النامية يسودها تفكير تقليدي، وتحكمها قيم جامدة، تقف في سبيل التغيير وتعترض مجراه، ومن ثم فإن التعليم يساعد ويعمل على إزالة المعوقات الثقافية، وخلق إتجاهات علمية جديدة تساعد على الإنتقال بالمجتمعات من الشكل التقليدي إلى الشكل المعاصر.
والتعليم يمكن أن يؤدي وظيفته في هذا المجال بوسائل متعددة، فهو يساعد على إكتشاف وتنمية مواهب الأفراد، ويهيئ له سبيل التفكير الموضوعي في مختلف المسائل ويزيد قدرتهم على الخلق والإبتكار؛ والتعليم من ناحية أخرى يحفز الأفراد إلى تحقيق التقدم، ويجعل العقول أكثر إستعداداً وقابلية للتغيير والرغبة فيه.
في هذا المجال، يشرح هذا البحث الدور الذي يمكن أن يقوم به التعليم في التنمية الإجتماعية في القرية المصرية، وهو لا يقتصر في ذلك على الناحية النظرية الأكاديمية فحسب، بل يتعدى هذا إلى بيان الدور الذي قام به التعليم واقعاً وفعلاً في القرية المصرية وذلك من خلال دراسة ميدانية تجريبية لمجموعتين من السكان في قرية مصرية، تتميز المجموعة الأولى بأنها حصلت على قدر معين من التعليم، بينما تفتقر المجموعة الثانية إلى هذا المتغير.
وعليه، يسعى البحث إلى التعرف على دور التعليم في تغيير إتجاهات القرويين نحو القضايا الآتية: 1-المشاركة السياسية، 2-الإستفادة من الخدمات التعليمية والخدمات الصحية، 3-تنظيم الأسرة، 4-تعليم الفتاة، 5-تعليم الأبناء حرفاً ومهناً يدوية جديدة.
