يعد هذا الكتاب دراسة نظرية لبعض المتغيرات الثقافية، التي تدخل ضمن موضوعات علم إجتماع التنمية، ولا يخفى أن موضوعات التنمية عموماً والتنمية البشرية على وجه الخصوص كانت ولا تزال محط إهتمام الخاصة والعامة، وهي ما تنفك بين مرة وأخرى تستقطب الإهتمام من قبل الشعوب والأمم التي وقفت منتصبة قائمة، وشعورنا الدائم أن وقوفها، وإنتصابها هذا لا يزال قائماً على مقعد خشبي غير ثابت الأوصال، وأنها إذا ما أرادت الخروج من دائرة الفقر والجهل والتخلف، فعليها وقبل أن تتبنى أي طرح أو نموذج تنموي، أن تنمي الإنسان من أجل الوصول بالإنسان لإنسانيته، لأن الإنسان هو هدف التنمية ووسيلتها وغايتها.
والدراسة محاولة للكشف عن طبيعة العلاقة ما بين الثقافة والتنمية البشرية، من خلال الدور الذي يمكن أن تؤديه بعض المتغيرات الثقافية الأساسية مثل اللغة والدين والإعلام في عملية التنمية البشرية.
