إن معظم المنظمات تسعى إلى إدارة ما يسمى بالتميز، كأحد الأساليب التي تساعد على مواجهة المنافسة، ويتطلب هذا الوقوف على أمرين أساسيين، هم الوضع التنافسي للمنظمة، وتناول الفكر الإداري الوضع التنافسي للمنظمة، كما أن هذا الوضع يشكل خمس قوى تنافسية هي تهديد المنافسين الجدد، والصراع بين المنافسين الحاليين، تهديد المنتجات البديلة، كذلك قوى المشترين التفاوضية، وقوى الموردين التفاوضية.
