حديث الغوص ذو شجون وذكريات غالية عن أهم مورد للرزق في مملكة البحرين ومنطقة الخليج العربي عموماً قبل إكتشاف النفط، إذ أنه موضوع يثير الأشجان في النفوس عن مهنة الشدائد والمخاطر في خضم البحر الواسع طلباً للرزق الحلال.
لقد كان سكان البحرين قبل إكتشاف النفط في سنة 1932م يعتمدون في حياتهم على ثلاثة مصادر رئيسة للرزق هي صيد اللؤلؤ والزراعة والتجارة، ويعتبر صيد اللؤلؤ والزراعة هما الأكثر توفيراً لفرص العمل، وبفضل موقع البحرين الإستراتيجي على طريق التجارة التقليدي إلى منطقة الخليج العربي وتوافر المياه العذبة وموانئ السفن أصبحت مركزاً تجارياً وإقتصادياً هاماً على مدى تاريخ الجزيرة العربية.
وقد بلغ عدد سفن الغوص في البحرين سنة 1896م حوالي 9000 سفينة يعمل عليها 35000 بحاراً حسب الإحصائيات التي أوردها "لوريمر" في كتاب دليل الخليج العربي؛ وقد اعتمد المؤلف في إستقاء معلومات هذا البحث على ثلاثة مصادر: المقابلات الشخصية لكثير ممن مارسوا هذه المهنة الشاقة، الإطلاع على ما أمكن الحصول عليه من سجلات قديمة، المراجع التي كتبت عن الغوص سواء مراجع قديمة أو حديثة.
وقد قام بتقسيم هذا المبحث إلى ستة فصول كما يلي:
-الفصل الأول: ويشتمل على الغوص والإستعداد له.
-الفصل الثاني: ويشتمل على إجراءات الركبة.
-الفصل الثالث: ويشمل عملية الغوص.
-الفصل الرابع: ويشمل اللؤلؤ وتمويل صناعة الغوص.
-الفصل الخامس: ويشتمل على إجراءات القفال.
-الفصل السادس: ويشتمل على حسابات الغوص.
