كانت السينما حلمنا المشترك، ولكني عدت واكتشفت أن حلمينا مختلفان، فأحمد يحلم بتمثيل الأدوار التي يشاهدها على الشاشة، أما أنا فأحلم بتنفيذها في الواقع، وحتى الآن لم أستطع تحديد أينا كان الواعي. ما بالك ساهياً؟! هل تسمعني؟! دعك من المتراس والسائق، لا تحدق فيه هكذا. لا تلمه يا صديقي، فهو مجرد عضو من أعضاء الجرافة... إنه الجراف، دعك منه الآن... اتبعني إلى الفيء لنتابع القصة. "هل تستطيعين شراء دراجة لي؟! أو، على الأقل، كرة قدم.. بالطبع لا. إذاً.. سأذهب لبيع الكعك في صيدا".. ضحكت والدتي من قراري المفاجيء ثم عبثت بشعري بعدما غطتني باللحاف وقالت: "هذا هو طموحك يا دكتور؟! تريد أن تصبح بائع كعك؟! ومن سيطبب أهالي القرية؟ تريد بيع الكعك كأولئك الأميين؟! أنسيت أنك الأول في الصف؟ ماذا تريد أن يقول الناس عنك؟! حفيد المختار يبيع الكعك في أزقة صيدا!! ثم يا حبيبي نم". كان موعد الانطلاق عند الخامسة فجراً. تأكدت من نوم أمي، قبلتها في جبينها، وخرجت من المنزل كلصّ. "عجّل كي نأخذ مكاناً مميزاً في الفان" صرخ أحمد ما إن لمحني خارجاً. ثم انطلق راكضاً. لكن ركضنا ذهب سدىً، قلت له حين وصلنا إلى الساحة ورأينا ذلك المشهد المضحك.. كان أكثر من عشرين ولداً محشورين داخل فانٍ بالكاد يتسع لثمانية. "لا تكن مغفلاً، اصعد وإلا تركونا هنا" نهرني بلهجة آمرة، صعدت مذعناً فتبعني، ثم تبعنا ولدان آخران، صرخ أحدهما فيما نصف جسده ما زال في الخارج "فوَّلِتْ" فنهض السائق عن مقعده، اتجه إلى الباب الجانبي للباص وصرخ بالأولاد: "صنبو عابعضكم وَلَهْ" ثم رفع قدمه وضغط على مؤخرة أحدهم (ليتمكن من إغلاق الباب) فانحشرنا في الداخل ككتلة واحدة".
كان ذلك في أوائل آب من العام 1975، أي بعد أربعة أشهر على اندلاع الحرب الأهلية في لبنان. ويتابع الروائي سرد هذه القصة التي تتحدث عن مشاهد هذه الحرب ضمن سرديات شيقة من خلال شخصية محورية هي بائع الكعك الذي تحول فيما بعد إلى مقاتل ثم قناص. يأسرك الروائي بأسلوبه التلقائي حيث يبعث في المشاهد الحيوية والحركة لتصبح على مرمى قريب من تلك الحرب التي أملت ألا تعود حتى بذكرياتها.
