إن هذا الكتاب رائد في مجاله، بل إن أهميته المعرفية وقيمته الفنية لا تنبع من صدوره في ظل ندرة المؤلفات والمطبوعات المعنية بطبقات الخطاطين فحسب، بل تنبع كذلك من أنه مصنوع على يد إثنين من أبرز أهل الإبداع والتميز على مستويات الفن والبحث والتأليف في مجال الخط العربي..
فمؤلف الكتاب، في الأصل، هو الخطاط الكبير هاشم محمد البغدادي الذي كان قد وضع مادته العلمية الأساس في مسودة كتابية ظلت مخطوطة حتى تسنى للدكتور إدهام محمد حنش، الباحث المعروف بكتاباته العميقة ومؤلقاته الرصينة في فن الخط العربي، العمل على العناية بها من خلال تحقيقها وتحريرها والتقديم لها على أساس ما هو مطلوب علمياً وفنياً للتأليف والنشر، فكان هذا الكتاب الذي يتناول سير أكثر من (150) خطاطاً بارزاً من مؤسسي فن الخط العربي الرواد الأوائل في بغداد العباسية، ومن الخطاطين العثمانيين، ومن خطاطي مصر والشام والعراق وإيران، في مختلف العصور.. ويوثق لإبداعهم الخطي ومكانتهم الفنية بعشرات اللوحات والصور التي دفعت (دار الكتاب الثقافي) إلى العناية بإخراجه على نحو فني مميز، ونشره في حلة طباعية بهية وملونة.
