كان للخط العربي أهمية كبيرة جداً في الحضارة العربية الإسلامية، وظهرت الحاجة إليه منذ بداية النهوض الحضاري الذي شهدته الأمة العربية في صدر الإسلام. وقد تطور الخط العربي بعد ذلك وشاع استخدامه في الأمصار، وأخذ الخطاطون يجودون الكتابة ويبالغون في تحسينها، وكانت هناك إجازات لأصحاب الخطوط تلك الإجازة كانت تتم بين الأستاذ المجيز الطالب المجاز، وعلى المجيز أن يذكر سلسلة الإسناد إلى أن يصل الأصل الذي أخذ عنه، وأحياناً لا يشترط أن يتصل المجاز بالمجيز أو بمن أذن له اتصالاً مباشراً.
ويقول مؤلف الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته بأنه وفي فترات التاريخ الإسلامي المتقدمة أصبح نوال الإجازة والحصول عليها أمنية لدى الناس فكان الآباء يلحون في طلب الإجازة لأولادهم من العلماء، وهناك على المخطوطات الكثير من الإجازات تمنح من المؤلفين إلى تلاميذهم لتدريس مؤلفاتهم، وقد استعملت ديباجات، ونصوص معينة في كتابه الإجازات، كما كتب بعضها على شكل نثر أو نظم، ومن خلال ما وصل من نماذج اجازات الخطاطين وجد المؤلف أنها تمثل فناً قائماً بذاته يعتمد على أسلوب معين، اتخذ صيغاً تكررت من قبل الخطاطين المجيزين والمجازين، وقد عرض لذلك كله من خلال دراسة تناول تاريخ الاجازات وأنماطها وصيغها وأشكالها وقوانينها، وأشهر المجيزين والمجازين.
وقد قام بترسيم بعض العناصر والوحدات الزخرفية والتي حُلّيت بها الإجازات وتخطيطها، مع دراسته لكل إجازة، وهي تمثل تأثيرات لمدارس عربية وإسلامية في الزخرفة والتذهيب. ويمكن القول بأن الدراسة التي تضمنها الكتاب بإمكانها الإسهام في إعطاء صورة واضحة لها النوع من الإجازات، لفتح المجال أمام الباحثين للتوسع في دراسة هذا الموضوع المهم من تراثنا العربي.
