ترجم عن الألمانية سليمان حاج علي (مختارات شعرية) للشاعر الألماني الأصل، السويسري الجنسية هيرمان هسّه الحائز على جائزة نوبل 1946.
ويبدأ كتابه بمقدمة عن حياة وأعمال الشاعر، بدءاً من ديوان شعره الأول "أغانٍ رومانسية" (1899م) مروراً بــ "مخلفات هيرمان لاوشر من النثر والقصائد" (1901م)... وإنتهاءً برواية "رحلة الشرق" (1930م)، ومشاركات أدبية كثيرة يذكرها الكتاب.
يقول المترجم: اشتهر هيرمان هسه بوصفه روائياً إذ يعتبر اليوم في طليعة الروائيين العالميين، في رواياته وأشعاره هناك وصف لهذا الإنسان المتأرجح الضبابي، اليائس، المستسلم والمغترب الذي يسعى إلى بناء دوحة من أحلامه، دون أن يجد ضالته، وإذا ما خيَّل له أنه وجدها فالعزوف ثم إلى الأمام، في رواياته يطرق هيرمان هيسّه أعماق النفس البشرية في هاجسها وضياعها وآلامها: اشهر رواياته: بيترك كامينسند - دميان - سد هارتا.
حول القصائد المترجمة في هذا الكتاب: الأشعار المترجمة هنا تعود إلى مرحلتين من عمر الأديب: القصائد الإثنتان والعشرون الأولى منها "بدءاً من قصيدة (مساءً في القرية) صفحة /17/ وحتى قصيدة (مراحل) صفحة /47/"، وهي تعود للمرحلة ما قبل سنة 1944 من عمر الشاعر والإحدى والأربعون قصيدة الأخيرة "بدءاً من قصيدة (عيشي سعيدة يا سيدة العالم) صفحة /49/ حتى آخر قصيدة، (جلجلة غصنٍ متشقق، صياغة ثالثة صفحة /128/ )"، وتعود بتاريخها للفترة الواقعة ما بين (1962 - 1944) حيث توفي الشاعر في التاسع من آب 1962م.
وفي صفحات الكتاب الأخيرة نبذة مفصلة عن حياة وقصائد الشاعر، وقراءة نقدية للمترجم، وملحق صور للشاعر.
