سدهارتا - هيرمان هيسهكانت هناك شجرة على ضفة النهر، شجرة جوز هند. اتكأ سدهارتا عليها، ولف ذراعه حول جذعها ثم تطلع إلى المياه المخضرة التي تتدفق تحته. تطلع إلى الأسفل وملأته رغبة في أن يرخي نفسه ليغرق في الماء. فالفراغ الرهيب في الماء كان يعكس فراغاً مرعباً في روحه. نعم. كان في نهايته. إذ لم يعد هناك شيء قد تبقى إلا أن يزيل نفسه. هذا هو العمل الذي كان يتوق للقيام به، أن يدمر الصيغة التي كان يكرهها! فلتلتهم الأسماك قلب سدهارتا هذا، هذا المعتوه، هذا الجسد الفاسد المهترئ، تلك الروح البليدة المستهلكة! فلتلتهمه الأسماك والتماسيح ولتمزقه الشياطين إرباً. بملامح متشنجة راح يحدق إلى الماء فرأى وجهه وبصق عليه. أبعد ذراعيه عن جذع الشجرة وتحول قليلاً لعله يسقط على رأسه ويغوص. وانحنى بعينين مغلقتين نحو الموت.
