ولد الشيخ الجليل محمّد العزيز جعيّط سنة 1303 هـ /1886. وترقى علميّا إلى أن بلغ رتبة أستاذ في التّعليم العالي بالجامع الأعظم. واشتغل في الفتوى والقضاء بصفته قاضيا مالكيّا ثمّ شيخا للإسلام المالكي ثمّ وزيرا للعدليّة التّونسية. وهو أوّل من توّلى خطّة مفتي الدّيار التونسيّة في دولة الاستقلال، ورغم هذه الشّهرة العلميّة لم ينل الشيخ جعيّط حظه معرفيّا.
ويعتبر هذا البحث أول دراسة مفردة تهتمّ بأحد أعلام الزيتونة الذي كاد أن يكون مغمورا، وتهتمّ بالكشف عن سيرته ومؤلّفاته وآرائه وإصلاحاته وآثاره المتنوّعة، والتّي كادت أن تكون مجهولة أيضا، والتّي يتمّ التّعريف بها لأول مرّة، وينفرد هذا البحث بفتح أقفال مخطوطة لم يقع نشرها سابقا. واستنطق ذاكرة ثلّة من الشّيوخ الذين تتلمذوا له واستفادوا منه.
ويضمّ الكتاب مدخلا و أربعة أبواب وهي: - الباب الأوّل : الشيخ جعيّط: نسبه، أسرته،تعلّمه . - الباب الثّاني : الشيخ جعيّط في سلك التدريس: نشاطه و إصلاحاته. - الباب الثّالث : الشيخ جعيّط في سلك الفتيا و القضاء: وظائفه و إصلاحاته. - الباب الرّابع : آثار الشيخ جعيّط و أهميتها.
