قلت له إن حياتي ليست على شفا هاوية، لكني لا أستطيع أن أتصالح معها. الأفضل أن تنتفي، من أن تكون على ما هي عليه الآن. تحدثت عن قرفي، وغيثاني اليومي، وأنني أكره كل ما حولي، وكل شيء. أكره رجال شرطتهم وصحفهم، وأخبارهم. أمقت الدخول الى مكتب، ومتجر، وحتى الى مقهى أكره الملامح الوضيعة من حولي، هؤلاء البشر الذين يحتفلون بما كانوا يحتقرونه بالأمس. أكره صبرهم، حلمهم، هروبهم، انتهازهم الفبرص، لعبة الغميضة، وطول الأناة، والامتيازات وذلك الشرطي على الطريق العام، الذي لم يجرؤ على ركلي، فقط لأني (ساليناس)، كرهته لهذا السبب، أكثر من كونه مسني بحذائه. أكره العماء، الأمل الزائف، حياة الأقنعة، الموسومين، المنمطين الذين إذا ما كفّ الكرباج لحظة واحدة عن جلدهم، يبتهجون وأكره نفسي. نفسي بالدرجة الأولى، لمجرد كوني هنا، ولا أفعل شيئاً. أعرف أني موسوم ومدجّن حتى هذه اللحظة على الأقل، أو سوف يؤول بي الأمر الى ذلك، إذا لم أفعل شيئاً، لمقاومته.
