تدور حوادث رواية "لا مصير" في أواخر الحرب العالمية الثانية وهي تتحدث عن حياة المعسكرات وعلاقة المعتقلين ببعض وبالدرجة الأولى عن اكتشاف المعتقل اليافع العالم المحيط به ومحاولة فهم ما يدور حوله ووضع تصوراته الخاصة به عن هذه البيئة غير الطبيعية. وهي في مجملها تقدم لنا صورة ذاتية واقعية وليست انتقائية أو نمطية كما جرت العادة على تقديم صورة معسكرات الاعتقال. كما دون كرتيس في هذه الرواية أفكاره الأساسية التي نجد أصداءها تتردد في أعماله اللاحقة. إذ يقول: "لو كان هناك مصير، فالحرية غير ممكنة؛ لكن لو.. كانت هناك حرية، فلا يوجد مصير، أي.. أننا نحن أنفسنا المصير ذاته".
الفكرة الثانية التي يؤكد عليها الكاتب هي مبدأ الاستمرارية، ويتجلى عنده في استحالة البدء بحياة جديدة، فالإنسان لا يبدأ حياة جديدة بل يواصل حياته القديمة رغم المنعطفات، إذ لا يمكن محو الذاكرة كما تسمح ملفات القرص الصلب في جهاز الكمبيوتر، لتحمل معلومات جديدة، فهو يقول: "لا أستطيع بدء حياة جديدة إلا إذا ولدت من جديد". وتنال هذه الفكرة تعبيرها في حديثه عن قيام الإنسان بخطو خطواته الخاصة به، وبذلك تتألف حياته من عدد كبير من الخطوات الصغيرة أو الكبيرة المتتالية، التي تتبع بعضها البعض.
