ينظر للصحافة الإستقصائية اليوم على أنها التجسيد الحقيقي لرسالة الصحافة في خدمة المصلحة العامة وتحقيق النفع العام وحماية حقوق الناس وحراسة مصالحهم، ويُعد إستخدام اللون الإستقصائي في أي صحيفة مطبوعة من أبرز علامات النجاح لهذه الصحيفة، نظراً لأهمية هذا اللون الصحفي المميز، والوظائف التي يؤديها والنتائج التي يُحققها، مقارنة باللون الصحفي التقليدي بأنماطه المختلفة، وقد نجحت الصحافة الإستقصائية طوال سنوات مضت، في كشف الكثير من الفضائح والإنتهاكات ومظاهر الفساد في أرجاء متعددة من العالم، وبخاصة في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية ودول أوروبا الغربية.
وقد جاء هذا الكتاب في تسعة فصول، توزعت على وفق الآتي: الفصل الأول، وجاء تحت عنوان: ماهية الصحافة الإستقصائية ومفهومها وأهميتها ومستلزماتها، وتناول الفصل الثاني: ماهية التحقيق الإستقصائي وطبيعته ومفهومه وملامحه وأسسه وشروطه وخصائصه، أما الفصل الثالث فقد تناول صفات محرر التحقيقات الصحفية الإستقصائية وسماته، في حين اختص الفصل الرابع بتناول معوقات إعداد التحقيقات الصحفية الإستقصائية والمتطلبات الخاصة بنجاحها، وجاء الفصل الخامس تحت عنوان: مجالات التحقيقات الصحفية الإستقصائية وأهميتها ومتطلبات إعدادها وتنفيذها، واختص الفصل السادس بإعداد التحقيقات الصحفية الإستقصائية وتنفيذها، وتناول الفصل السابع الإستفادة من إمكانات شبكة الإنترنت في عملية إعداد التحقيقات الصحفية الإستقصائية وتنفيذها.
أما الفصل الثامن فقد جاء تحت عنوان: الإعداد للمقابلات الصحفية مع مصادر المعلومات الخاصة بالتحقيق الصحفي الإستقصائي وآليات إجرائها، في حين اختص الفصل التاسع والأخير بتناول أسس بناء التحقيقات الصحفية الإستقصائية وكتابتها وتحريرها.
