"ستعذروتني إن شئتم، فقد قيل أني ولدت للنحس، وأنه تعذر على من كانت أمي، أن تلدني بيسر فتقسرت ولادتها، وماتت بعد أن أودعت ما تخلصت منه في حضن حجرة موتها، لكنها لم تكن بمفردها، فقبلها كانت يد نحسي، ولم يكن لي يد بعد، كانت قد امتدت إلى جدي وأبي، فرحلا قبل قدومي، وقد اختلفت بهما طرق الرحيل. وحين سمعت من لسان قرية الديمانة بالحكاية، وقد زادوا بان القرية نفسها لم تلفت من نحسي، فقد حلّ بها جراد وتحط ولم تكن بها غيول لتفيض بما فيها، ومع ذلك غاضت عين الشرب، وهي الآن قد عادت، أقول لكم أني لما سمعت ذلك، لم أجد المبرر الكافي لقسوة التنكر لحضوري في عالمهم التخم بالتعاسة. وأنا لم أحضر بإختياري، كما أن من كانا قد اختارا مجيئي لم يموتا بإختيارهما وأنا مع كل ذلك حسن النية، إلا أن حسن النية لا يغير من المشكلة، ولا يخفف منها. مولوداً للنحس كنت، ولذا غفرت، ولم أغفر لقريتي إهمالها طفولتي، وتقريب المسافة، أحياناً بينها وبين موتي، ولحسن نية طفولتي، أوكل الله نبأ طفولتي وأنا، عجوزاً فقدت أيامها، ومواسم خصوبتها، قبل أن ينشق عن حلمها. وكانت شجرة مورقة بلا ثمر، وقد كانت طيبة، أو لعلها صارت طيبة، فقد فهمت بعد ذلك أنها ما كانت لتغامر معنا لولا أنها تحمل حصتها، هي الأخرى من النحس، ولعنا سمعناها مرة تؤكد لنفسها الحظ وهم اخترعه المحتالون، ثم قصر على توبيخ نفسها، وتؤكدنا أنها لم تصل إلى ما وصلت إليه إلا لأن نسحها كان يترصدها فاتحاً عينيه أيضاً… ".
يحاول الكاتب تسليط الضوء على المعتقدات الراسخة في بعض المجتمعات وخاصة تلك التي يعتقد بها أهل القرى، والتي تهيمن عنوة على الواحد لتسلب منه مقوماته كإنسان، ولتجعل حياته مرهونة بذالك المعتقد.
يستخدم الكاتب شخصيته المحورية الأمثال الذي لازمته صفة النحس التي زرعها داخله أهل قريته، لتبقى كالخيال الذي يرافقه على دروب حياته.
