يتقصى هذا الكتاب سيرة اكتشاف ملحمة جلجامش في الثلث الأخير من القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي، وفك رموز الكتابة المسمارية التي كتبت بها الملحمة، كما يسلط الضوء على الدور المحوري الذي لعبه المستكشف العراقي هرمزد رسام في اكتشاف مكتبة آشور بانيبال، التي وجدت فيها ألواح الملحمة الاثنا عشر، وقام بترجمتها عالم الآثار البريطاني جورج سميث، وهو الدور الذي دأب بعض البريطانيين على طمسه ونسبته لأنفسهم، وكذلك يتتبع المؤلف سيرة الملحمة إلى بدايات التاريخ المدون، حيث نشأت من سلسلة الأناشيد السومرية، التي قيلت في تمجيد جلجامش ملك أوروك وباني سورها العظيم.
