لماذا هذا الاهتمام بعلم من أعلام اللسانيات في الوقت الذي بدأت فيه اللسانيات تصبح مملة كما يقال؟
ذلك لأن تأمل سوسير الطويل في اللسان واللغات هو تأمل عميق كل العمق.
لقد سبر سوسير، بصبر لا ينفد، وبقلق في بعض الأحيان، كل "كهوف" -والكلمة مقتبسة منه اللسان. وقد بلغت الصعوبات التي تنشأ عن "الإزدواجية" الجوهرية للموضوع المدروس حداً جعل سوسير يعزف تماماً عن نشر نتائج تأملاته، وهي تأملات لم تشع بين الناس إلا بعد مونه. لكنه اكتشف في مسيرته العلمية "أواصر القربى" بين اللسان و"السيميولوجيات" الأخرى التي هي الكتابة والحكاية الخرافية والأسطورة، واصطدام اصطداماً شعر معه بالألم بلغز "الجناس التصحيفي" في الشعر.
وسيكون أثر هذا الفكر الذي لم يبلغ غايته حاسماً، إذ شمل اللسانيات والسيميولوجيا في آن معاً، وتجاوز علوم اللسان ليصل إلى علوم الإنسان كلها: لنفكر في ميرلو-بونتي وليفي ستروس ولاكان.
لقد سعى ميشال أريفيه في هذا الكتاب، متحلياً بصبر يريده، شأنه صبر اللساني الكبير، لا ينفد، إلى سبر البنية العميقة لفكر سوسير.
