على الرغم من ان الكتاب يحمل اسم (فرديناند دي سوسير) عنوانا له، بما يوحي انه سيرة خاصة لهذا الرجل، فإن الواقع العلمي يعلن خلاف هذا، على نحو يوحي بأن هذا العنوان احرى ان يظلم مضمون الكتاب من أن يدل عليه دلالة حقيقية. ذلك بأن سيرة حياة سوسير لم تشغل من الكتاب الا حيزا محدودا للغاية. اما سائر الكتاب فقد خصص لنشاط سوسير العلمي ، وعلى وجه الخصوص في ميداني علم اللغة الحديث والسميوطيقا، على نحو ما اشتملت عليهما محاضراته التى جمعت وطبعت في كتاب بعد وفاته.
ولهذا السبب آثرنا أن نضيف إلى عنوان الكتاب في هذا الترجمة عنوانا جانبيا يبرز المضمون الحقيقي للكتاب.
