نديم غورسيل كاتب تركي ولد عام 1951, بعد تخرجه من المدرسة الثانوية درس في السوربون تخرج من السوربون فرع "الأدب الفرنسي الحديث" عام 1974, وفي عام 1979 حصّل شهادة دكتوراه في الأدب المقارن بعد الانتهاء من أطروحة عن لويس أراغون وناظم حكمت.
في عام 1977 تلقي غورسيل أعلى جائزة أدبية في تركيا، هي جائزة أكاديمية اللغة التركية.

هذه الرواية الرائعة تبدو كأنها سيرة ذاتية. فعبر طرح الأسئلة حول المفاصل الإشكالية في تاريخ إسلام الدعوة والإسلام المعاصر، يتساءل نديم غورسيل عن الإيمان وعن إشكالات الاسلام وعن تركيا الحديثة وعلاقتها بتاريخها الذي كانت فيه مقرّ الخلافة الإسلامية.
بعد موت أبيه يعيش الحفيد في كَنَف جدّه وجدّته. الجدّ، المحامي، والذي كان ضابطاً في الجيش التركي، كان مسلماً تقيّاً سعى جاهداً لغرس مبادئ الإسلام في ذهن حفيده. لكن هذا الحفيد الذي تأثّر بأفكار جدّه وحكايات جدّته النابعة من التقليد التركي، اكتشف أن الحياة التي يعيشها في مرحلة ما بعد الخلافة لا تتطابق مع الحكايات الجميلة عن حياة محمّد وتطرح عليه تساؤلات عن العلاقة بالدين وعن تاريخ هذا الدين وعن الاسلام بين مرحلة حياة محمّد وحياة المسلمين اليوم.
لماذا وكيف انتصر محمد واستطاع تحطيم أصنام الجاهليّة، التي كان المكيّون والبدو يعبدونها ويطلقون عليها تسمية "بنات الله"؟
لماذا خاض الجيش التركي القتال ضد مسلمين آخرين في مكّة والمدينة، اللتين يقدسونهما؟
هكذا يبني هذا الحفيد عالماً من الأفكار قوامه الصراع بين الخير والشر.
